3-Day Serengeti Fly-In Safari Itinerary

Day 1 : Fly from Arusha or Zanzibar to Serengeti

Morning — Flight from Arusha or Zanzibar

Your 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari begins with a scheduled light-aircraft flight from Arusha Airport (ARK) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) to a Serengeti airstrip suited to your accommodation and itinerary.

Flying allows you to bypass the lengthy overland journey and arrive inside the Serengeti ready to start exploring. Scheduled flights operate to several Serengeti airstrips, including Seronera, Kogatende, Ndutu and western Serengeti airstrips, with the most appropriate airstrip depending on your safari area and travel season.

Safari focus: Flight + Serengeti arrival

Midday — Airstrip Pickup & First Game Drive

After landing, your private safari guide will meet you at the airstrip and introduce you to your safari vehicle.

There is no unnecessary transfer to another town. Your Serengeti game drive begins directly from the airstrip, with your route determined by the location of wildlife, your accommodation and the time available.

Stop for lunch at your lodge, camp or a designated picnic location before continuing your exploration.

Wildlife focus: Wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, elephants and resident predators.

Evening — Sunset Game Drive & Camp

Continue your afternoon game drive as the Serengeti landscape changes under the evening light. Cooler temperatures can bring increased wildlife activity, creating excellent opportunities for photography and predator sightings.

Return to your lodge or tented camp before nightfall, enjoy dinner and settle into your first night in the Serengeti.

Overnight: Serengeti lodge or tented camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2 : Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive

Morning — Sunrise Game Drive

Rise early for one of the most rewarding periods of your Serengeti safari.

After breakfast, head into the park while temperatures are cooler and wildlife can be particularly active. Your guide will use knowledge of animal behaviour, recent sightings and local conditions to determine the day's route.

This is an important advantage of a private safari: rather than following a predetermined route, your game drive can adapt to what is happening in the Serengeti that morning.

Wildlife focus: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants and large herbivore herds.

Midday — Picnic Lunch & Wildlife Exploration

Around midday, pause for lunch while continuing your exploration of the Serengeti ecosystem.

The exact safari area depends on the season. The Serengeti's wildlife movements are not static: the Great Migration follows rainfall and fresh grazing, while resident wildlife remains throughout the year. Tanzania's official tourism information identifies the annual wildebeest and zebra migration as one of the defining features of the Serengeti ecosystem.

Rather than promising a particular migration event regardless of the month, your guide will position the safari according to your travel dates, current wildlife movements and the region of Serengeti where you are staying.

Evening — Prime Predator Viewing

As the afternoon cools, continue your Serengeti game drive into the evening.

This is an excellent period for photography, scenic views and watching predators become more active. Your guide will gradually make the journey back toward camp while continuing to look for wildlife along the way.

Dinner and another night in the Serengeti follow.

Overnight: Serengeti lodge or tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 : Final Game Drive & Fly Out

Morning — Final Serengeti Game Drive

Your final morning begins with an early game drive close to your accommodation and airstrip.

This is your last opportunity to explore the Serengeti before your flight, so the route is planned carefully around your departure time. Your guide will prioritize nearby wildlife areas rather than taking you too far from the airstrip.

Early morning light also provides some of the best conditions for safari photography. TANAPA highlights early morning and late afternoon game drives as particularly rewarding periods for wildlife viewing and photography.

Wildlife focus: Last-minute predator sightings, elephants, giraffes, zebra and wildebeest.

Midday — Breakfast & Serengeti Airstrip Transfer

Return to camp for breakfast and prepare for your departure.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have additional time for relaxation or a short final wildlife drive before transferring to the appropriate Serengeti airstrip.

Your exact departure time is confirmed according to the flight schedule available for your travel date.

Evening — Fly Back to Arusha or Zanzibar

Board your light aircraft for your onward journey.

Choose the routing that best fits your wider Tanzania itinerary:

Serengeti → Arusha (ARK)

Ideal for travelers continuing with northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro or onward international arrangements.

Serengeti → Zanzibar (ZNZ)

Ideal for combining your safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday. Flights between Serengeti and Zanzibar are operated on scheduled safari-aircraft networks, subject to routing and availability.

Your 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari concludes with two nights inside the Serengeti and substantially more time dedicated to wildlife than a comparable short road safari.

Frequently Questions About the 3-Day Serengeti Fly-In Safari

Is 3 days enough for a Serengeti safari?

Yes. Three days can provide an excellent Serengeti safari experience when you fly instead of driving, particularly for travelers with limited time in Tanzania. The biggest advantage is that you avoid spending several hours travelling by road between Arusha and the Serengeti. Instead, you fly directly toward the Serengeti and begin your game drive shortly after landing.

This itinerary gives you two nights inside the Serengeti and approximately two and a half days focused on the safari experience, depending on your flight schedule. Your first day typically combines the flight with an afternoon game drive, the second day is dedicated to a full-day Serengeti safari, and the final day includes an early game drive before your return flight.

Three days will not allow you to explore every corner of the enormous Serengeti ecosystem, but that is not necessary for a rewarding safari. We strategically select the Serengeti region, airstrip and accommodation according to your travel dates and wildlife objectives, allowing you to concentrate your limited time in areas that make the most sense for your safari.

Can I fly from Zanzibar to the Serengeti for a 3-day safari?

Yes. A Zanzibar to Serengeti fly-in safari is one of the most convenient ways to combine Tanzania's wildlife and beach experiences. Instead of travelling back to mainland Tanzania by ferry or arranging a separate long road transfer, you can take a scheduled domestic flight from Zanzibar toward the Serengeti.

The flight routing and departure time depend on the airline schedule available for your travel date. Your arrival airstrip is also selected according to your accommodation and safari area. This is particularly important because the Serengeti covers a vast area, and choosing an airstrip close to your accommodation can reduce unnecessary transfer time.

After landing, your private safari guide meets you at the Serengeti airstrip, and your safari begins immediately. This makes the itinerary particularly suitable for travelers who have already spent several days relaxing in Zanzibar and want to add a short but genuine Serengeti wildlife experience.

After the safari, you can also arrange a flight back to Zanzibar, making it possible to return to the beach without adding another long road journey.

Which Serengeti airstrip is best for a 3-day fly-in safari?

There is no single Serengeti airstrip that is best for every traveler. The most suitable airstrip depends on where you stay, the season, current wildlife movements, and the specific experience you want from your safari.

Seronera is one of the most commonly used airstrips because of its central location and access to the Central Serengeti, an area known for abundant resident wildlife and year-round game viewing. For travelers visiting during particular migration periods, however, other airstrips may provide more strategic access to the relevant wildlife areas.

For example, Kogatende can be advantageous when the migration is in the northern Serengeti, while Ndutu can be strategically located during the southern Serengeti calving season. Western and southern airstrips can similarly make sense depending on your accommodation and seasonal objectives.

For a three-day safari, airstrip selection matters even more because minimizing unnecessary transfers protects your limited game-drive time. We therefore recommend the arrival and departure airstrip based on your complete itinerary rather than automatically using the same airstrip for every booking.

Can I fly from Arusha to the Serengeti for this safari?

Yes. Flying from Arusha to the Serengeti is an excellent option for travelers who want to maximize their safari time. A road journey from Arusha to the Serengeti can take several hours, depending on your destination within the park and road conditions. On a three-day itinerary, those hours represent a significant portion of your available safari time.

With a fly-in itinerary, you depart from Arusha Airport (ARK) and fly toward a Serengeti airstrip appropriate for your itinerary. After landing, your private guide takes over and begins the safari experience.

This arrangement is particularly useful for travelers arriving in Arusha shortly before their safari or those continuing to another destination after Serengeti. Rather than spending the first day travelling across northern Tanzania by road, you can spend that valuable time inside the Serengeti observing wildlife.

Your return flight can be arranged to Arusha, or you can continue by air to another destination such as Zanzibar, subject to the available flight routing and schedule.

What animals can I see on a 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari?

The Serengeti is one of Africa's most productive wildlife destinations, and even a short safari can produce an impressive range of sightings. Depending on the season and the area you visit, you may encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and numerous species of antelope.

The Serengeti is particularly famous for its large predator population. Lions are relatively widespread, while leopards are more secretive and are often associated with areas containing suitable cover, such as riverine vegetation and woodland. Cheetahs are more frequently associated with open plains where their hunting strategy is effective.

The Great Migration also changes the wildlife experience during different periods of the year. Millions of wildebeest, together with large numbers of zebra and other herbivores, move through different parts of the ecosystem following seasonal rainfall and grazing conditions.

However, a responsible safari operator should never promise a specific animal sighting. Wildlife is wild and unpredictable. Your guide uses experience, recent sightings, animal behaviour and local conditions to identify the most productive areas each day.

Can I see the Great Migration during a 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari?

Yes, but the timing and location of the Great Migration are critical. The migration is not a single event that occurs in one place throughout the year. The wildebeest herds move through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall, water availability and the availability of fresh grazing.

During approximately January to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area can become particularly important because of the annual calving season. Later in the year, the herds progressively move northward, creating different safari opportunities across the Serengeti.

The famous river-crossing scenes associated with the migration are generally connected with the northern Serengeti and the Mara River area during the appropriate seasonal period. Even then, river crossings are unpredictable and cannot responsibly be guaranteed for a particular safari date.

For a short fly-in safari, we use your travel month to determine the most appropriate Serengeti region and airstrip. This is much more meaningful than simply advertising a “Great Migration safari” regardless of when you travel.

What is the best time for a 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari?

The best time depends on what you want to experience. The Serengeti is a year-round safari destination, so there is no single month that is universally best for every traveler.

For general wildlife viewing, many travelers prefer the dry season from June to October, when vegetation is generally thinner and wildlife can be easier to locate around available water sources. This period also coincides with important stages of the Great Migration in parts of the Serengeti, although the exact location of the herds varies each year.

If your priority is the calving season, January through March can be particularly rewarding around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem. This period can offer exceptional opportunities to observe newborn wildebeest, large concentrations of herbivores and intense predator activity.

The shoulder and wetter months can also provide excellent safari experiences, including greener landscapes, fewer visitors in some areas and strong photographic conditions. Rather than recommending one month to everyone, we use your travel dates, wildlife priorities and preferred safari region to determine the most suitable itinerary.

Where do I stay during a 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari?

You spend two nights in Serengeti accommodation, allowing you to remain close to the wildlife rather than commuting into the park from a distant town. Your accommodation can be a safari lodge or tented camp, depending on your preferred comfort level, budget and the area selected for your itinerary.

Location is particularly important on a three-day fly-in safari. We do not select accommodation based solely on its facilities or appearance. We also consider its proximity to the appropriate airstrip, wildlife areas and planned game-drive routes.

For example, a property in Central Serengeti can be convenient for a Seronera-based itinerary, while accommodation in the northern Serengeti may be more appropriate during the months when migration activity reaches that region.

This approach allows the accommodation to become part of the safari strategy rather than simply being a place to sleep. You wake up inside the Serengeti ecosystem, making it possible to begin game drives early and return to camp without spending large portions of the day on transfers.

Is a 3-day Serengeti fly-in safari more expensive than a road safari?

Usually, yes. A fly-in Serengeti safari costs more than a comparable road safari because the package includes domestic flights, aviation fees and associated airstrip logistics. However, the price difference needs to be considered alongside the value of the time saved.

On a three-day itinerary, travelling by road can consume a substantial portion of your available safari time. Flying allows you to replace much of that transit with additional time inside the Serengeti, where your primary activities are game drives and wildlife viewing.

The final price also depends on several factors, including your departure point, travel season, number of travelers, accommodation category, flight routing and Serengeti location.

For travelers with only a few days available, the fly-in option can therefore offer better overall value in terms of time. It is particularly attractive for visitors combining Serengeti with Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Arusha or another Tanzania destination who want to experience the Serengeti without extending their holiday by several additional travel days.

Can I fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar after the safari?

Yes. A Serengeti to Zanzibar fly-in safari combination is an excellent option for travelers who want to finish their wildlife adventure with a beach holiday.

After your final morning game drive, you return to the appropriate Serengeti airstrip for your scheduled flight. Depending on the available routing and your travel date, you can continue toward Zanzibar rather than returning to Arusha first. This can significantly simplify your overall Tanzania itinerary.

The exact flight schedule is important because domestic safari flights operate according to published schedules and routing patterns that can vary by date. We therefore confirm the appropriate flight when planning your safari rather than publishing a fixed departure time that may not apply to every booking.

This combination creates a natural safari-and-beach itinerary: spend several days exploring the Serengeti, then fly directly onward for the beaches, marine activities and relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. For travelers beginning their holiday in Zanzibar, the itinerary can simply be reversed, with Zanzibar → Serengeti → Zanzibar.
